I liked Isabela and Varric so much because they are so uncomplicated! They are not committed to a cause, hold no particular grudge against anyone and don't really expect much of you. I'd say in a D&D they'd be the neutral good and neutral chaotic class. The rest of your companions want you to commit to something or to take positions or to help them in missions that go against your beliefs and they want to talk you into sharing their beliefs. Varric and Isabela will mostly talk you into sharing a beer :D
